Launch of the Institute for European PolicyMaking @ Bocconi University

PRESENTED AT AN EVENT IN HONOR OF MARIO MONTI IN THE PRESENCE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE ITALIAN REPUBLIC, SERGIO MATTARELLA, AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION, URSULA VON DER LEYEN, THE INSTITUTE WILL ACT AS A RESEARCH CENTER AND THINK TANK ON EUROPEAN ISSUES

A new initiative for Europe promoted by Bocconi University and open to Italian and European partners, the Institute for European Policy-Making @ Bocconi University was presented in the University’s Aula Magna on the occasion of the event "Bocconi, Italy, Europe". Celebrating the 120th anniversary of the University and the figure of Mario Monti (now President of the Javotte Bocconi Institute), the event was attended by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, with speeches by Giuliano Amato, former President of the Constitutional Court of Italy, journalist Ferruccio de Bortoli, and Jean-Claude Trichet, former President of the ECB. Speaking for Bocconi were Rector Francesco Billari, President Andrea Sironi (who succeeded Monti in office on 1 November) and Vice President Guido Tabellini.

As a tribute to Mario Monti’s distinguished service at Bocconi and to his lifetime commitment to European integration as an economist, opinion leader and holder of key responsibilities in the governance of the EU and Italy, Bocconi University and Istituto Javotte Bocconi are launching a new Initiative for Europe, the Institute for European Policy-Making @ Bocconi University.

The Institute, fully interdisciplinary in nature, will combine the analytic rigor of a research center and the policy impact of a think tank in a fact-based effort to raise public  awareness about Europe through outreach activities.

Its contribution to policy making also aims to confront and reduce the multi-fold obstacles that usually stand between the identification of appropriate policies and their adoption, execution, monitoring and ex-post evaluation.

The research & action Initiative is rooted at Bocconi with the ambition of working closely with a small number of partners elsewhere in Europe, in an international network of knowledge-based, committed promoters of the “Europe we need”.

The Initiative's mission is to conduct, debate and disseminate high quality research on the major policy issues facing the EU, its member states and its citizens in a rapidly changing world.

It is committed to defending the European ideal, in particular the unity and the diversity of the EU, as well as to promoting the rule of law, and the principles and values enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

The Initiative is also committed to contributing to the EU’s influence worldwide and to a prosperous, sustainable and equitable future for Europeans by fostering policy debates and a dialogue between different parts of European society through diverse outreach activities.

It will adopt a multi-disciplinary, open and far-sighted approach, making the most of the interplay between rigorous research and constructive action, the latter being aimed not only at effective policy design, but also incorporating consensus building and policy enforcement methods.
