A BEMACS First Year Student Recognized at the Trento Economics Festival

DANIELE BELFIORE, IN HIS FIRST YEAR OF THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ECONOMICS, MANAGEMENT AND COMPUTER SCIENCE, IS ONE OF THE WINNERS OF A COMPETITION FOCUSING ON THE DIFFICULT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY

He was already accepted to Bocconi, passing the test and participating in the Early Application Session. But his aim was to start his university education with more experience on his résumé, and he fully achieved his goal. Daniele Belfiore, an 18-year-old Catania native and a first-year student in the Bachelor of Science in Economics, Management and Computer Science (BEMACS) at Bocconi University, is one of the winners of the EconoMia competition. Aimed at upper secondary school students, the competition's awards ceremony will be held during the Trento Economics Festival from 24 to 27 September.

“I found out about this competition through the calls for applications distributed at my high school,” says Daniele, “and I decided to participate. We were asked to read extracts from academic texts, then answer a questionnaire and write two essays on the topic of how to balance economic development and sustainability. Everything was online, of course." Daniele's passion for economics is partly the result of family tradition. “I come from three generations of people working in this area in various capacities,” he says. “And I’m also really interested in this field. Browsing the web, I came across videos on the interesting subject of the relationship between economics and the technology sector. I realized this would be my future.”

As for the competition, an initial screening selected the top 40 participants based only on the questionnaire ("I got the highest score"). Then the top 20 were chosen based on their essays, and those participants will be awarded at the Festival.

“Without any sort of classification,” Daniele specifies. “I'm definitely very proud, it's a way of confirming that I've chosen the right field. Before enrolling at Bocconi, my idea was to prepare myself for a future as an entrepreneur, to launch a startup. But participating in this competition also allowed me to discover an interest in academic research. And I still have time to figure things out and make the best decision for my future.”

In the short term, Daniele's future will lead him to Trento for the awards ceremony, a guest at the Economics Festival from 25 to 27 September: "Everything will be broadcast online, but of course we’ll attend the awards ceremony in person. And we’ll also get a preview of some of the live events.”
