Virologist Ilaria Capua Guest of Broaden Your Frame

THE CYCLE OF SEMINARS TO BROADEN THE CULTURAL HORIZONS OF STUDENTS STARTS AGAIN ON FEBRUARY 8. ILARIA CAPUA WILL TALK ABOUT THE CONCEPT OF ONE HEALTH', WHICH RECOGNIZES DEEP CONNECTION BETWEEN THE HEALTH OF HUMANS, ANIMALS, PLANTS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

The Virologist and Director of the One Health Center of Excellence for Research and Training at the University of Florida Ilaria Capua will inaugurate the series of Broaden your Frame Seminars scheduled for the second semester, on February 8 at 11 am in the aula Notari of the Sarfatti building. "It is a unique opportunity to confront not only with a great scientist, but also with a real game changer: she ignited an international debate on sharing genetic information from panzootic H5N1 virus strains across disciplines,” says Antonella Carù, Dean of the Graduate School. "Her competence and ability to understand the direction taken by the world of knowledge encouraged her to challenge the rules of the current system for the good of science”.

During the seminar she will discuss with students the holistic concept of One Health, which recognizes the deep connection between the health of humans, animals, plants and the environment. An idea that has been shaped over the centuries and has gained momentum and traction as anatomy, physiology, microbiology and other disciplines have substantiated earlier theories. Capua will recall major historical milestones which have contributed to shaping the One Health concept as it is today, with special focus on Big Data and their disruptive impact.

The "Broaden Your Frame" seminars are open to graduate students and are included in the curricular supplementary activities. In particular, students in the 2018-19 cohort who participate in the seminars will be able to obtain the two credits provided by the study plan for the second year. In order to validate it as an exam, students have to attend at least 6 seminars (out of a total of 15) and to send a "triple-tweet" after each meeting, that is a short comment of max 840 characters on the theme addressed in the seminar at the address byf@unibocconi.it.
