Welcome to Our Community

, by Gianmario Verona - ordinario presso il Dipartimento di management e tecnologia
Our identity is the most important message we are trying to pass on to you. In the editorial that opens the September issue of viaSarfatti25', Rector Gianmario Verona extends his welcome to new students and new professors

These days, all of us who work, teach, study and do research at Bocconi are busy welcoming new students and new faculty – 16 from September – who are entering Via Sarfatti 25 for the first time. The concept we try to communicate above all concerns the identity of the community they are joining. Reading the many messages that come from our alumni every day, I was struck by one which confirmed to me that the values of our university are part of ourselves.

Ralph Klemp, a 1991 graduate, writes, "I left Bocconi 26 years ago, but the values are deeply ingrained in my DNA. The true value of Bocconi is its holistic approach to business and economics, maybe best expressed by Carlo Masini's old definition of a company's purpose:"The purpose of a company is to satisfy the institutional interests of institutional interest bearers ... who are the bearers of institutional interest? They are shareholders, management, workers, the environment and society. "

In an act of generosity towards Milan and its citizens, Ferdinando Bocconi, a visionary entrepreneur in the late nineteenth century, created the first university of economics and management in Italy along with one of the world's first business schools. To experience our university means immersing ourselves in his spirit, entering a multicultural community with a strong drive towards innovation and a full compenetration of theory and practice. It means diving into our urban campus in downtown Milan and exploiting all the opportunities the university and the city offer.

Each year, welcoming new members of the Bocconi community is an intense and engaging experience that refreshes our identity and leads us to share it.
