Matteo Del Fante Is the Bocconi Alumnus of the Year

HE TRANSFORMED POSTE ITALIANE, THE GOVERNMENT CONTROLLED COMPANY HE HAS HEADED SINCE 2017, INTO AN ITALIAN EXCELLENCE. POSTE ITALIANE'S COMMITMENT TO ASSIST THE VACCINATION CAMPAIGN DURING THE COVID19 EMERGENCY WAS AMONG THE REASONS CITED FOR THE AWARD BY THE BOCCONI ALUMNI COMMUNITY LED BY SILVIA CANDIANI (MICROSOFT ITALY)

Matteo Del Fante, CEO and General Manager of the Poste Italiane Group, is the 2021 Bocconi Alumnus of the Year. This recognition is an expression of the Bocconi Alumni Community (over 120,000 members gathered in 69 chapters worldwide) and has been given to an alumnus or alumna who have particularly distinguished themselves in their professional careers every year since 1987.

"Matteo Del Fante has turned the company he has been leading for four years into a success story thanks to the speed of innovation and the evolution of the skills of its people", underlines Silvia Candiani, president of the alumni community of the University and CEO of Microsoft Italy. “Under his management, in fact, the value of Poste stock has doubled on the Italian stock market; the company produced a +46% net profit compared to 2020, with a record of 50 billion transactions conducted with Poste Italiane cards, while the company has become the leading operator in Italy for B2C package delivery. Last but not least, he has made Poste Italiane a strategic pillar in support of Italy’s Covid19 vaccination campaign, by making available - with excellent results - the digital platform and logistic machinery of the Group for the handling of vaccination bookings and appointments. Professionalism, strategic vision and a great sense of public responsibility make him a commendable example for the top executives of state-owned companies".

Del Fante began his career at JP Morgan before graduating with honors in Economics in 1992 with a thesis titled “Asymmetric Information and the Bond Market. An Application to the Italian case”. In 2004 he joined Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), the Italian public investment bank, shortly after its privatization and started its activities in the real estate sector, climbing to the position of General Manager of CDP from 2010 to 2014. He subsequently headed Terna for three years, before being hired by Poste Italiane in 2017.

"I arrived in Milan in the second half of the 1980s", remembers Del Fante. "Milan was running fast; it just never stopped. Already back then it was a place of opportunity, a gateway to the world. Bocconi University was and is a flower at the crown of this city, built on the values of professionalism, resourcefulness, integrity, responsibility, openness, entrepreneurship: in a word, on merit. Merit, I was taught, is recognized in those who know how to understand, participate and devote themselves; without taking any shortcuts. This kind of merit is fundamental when you are serving the public interest. Being awarded as 2021 Bocconi Alumnus of the Year is a great source of pride for me. I am fortunate enough to manager a large group which has been rewarded by the market for the social sustainability of its corporate results; a company that, thanks to its offices spread throughout the Italian Peninsula supports the economic development of the national community, in particular thanks to technological and digital transformation, through which Poste Italiane has contributed in decisive way to the full deployment of the vaccination campaign, especially here in Milan and in Lombardy as a whole. It has been an opportunity for me to give back part of what I received from the Alma Mater and the city that welcomed me years ago."

The award ceremony will take place on 22 October.
