The Bocconian Who Represents Young Lawyers

, by Davide Ripamonti
An expert in litigation and arbitration, Chiara Caliandro has been the Italian leader of the International Association of Young Lawyers since 2017

Her first objective was to arrive in Milan. Then, once there, choose a law degree with concrete professional applications at a university with good international contacts. Bocconi met both requirements and so Chiara Caliandro, from Udine, did not hesitate to become a Bocconian and has never regretted it. Today, at the age of 34, she is an attorney for the De Berti Jacchia law firm, and much of what she knows was learned in the classrooms on the campus around Via Sarfatti.

"Bocconi is very well organized, and this enables you to focus on nothing other than your studies," says Chiara. "In addition, I have always had the aspiration to give an international dimension to my career, and so the experiences I did with Campus Abroad in New York and the internships I landed at the European Parliament and the European Commission in Brussels were both crucial for my subsequent profession".

Chiara deals in particular with litigation and arbitration in commercial disputes, working very often with colleagues from other countries. "Business legislation is very closely linked to the country of origin," he explains, "but working in international teams, you are somehow forced to learn the law of other countries. Ours is a constantly evolving profession, both for us and our clients."

Since 2017, Chiara Caliandro has been Italy's representative at the International Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA - under 45 years of age). Founded in 1962, the association has over 4,000 active members around the world: "I joined it in 2014 and my job is now to make it better known in Italy. I am working towards our annual congress, which this year will be held in Rome from 3 to 7 September". When someone inquires about her professional future, Chiara mentions two objectives: "My first objective is to be present at the October events which will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Bocconi Law Degree, the second, longer term objective is to grow professionally though training and experience in the law firm I currently work for. I have found my habitat and I want to stay here for a long time".
