Social Inclusion Made Possible by the Contribution of UBS Italia

Alberto Martini, Bocconi alumnus and Segment Head at UBS Wealth Management, tells how the financial company has decided to support Bocconi students

UBS Italia, the Italian subsidiary of the Swiss banking group that offers global financial services, has redoubled its commitment to support Bocconi. In academic year 2013-2014, UBS was the first corporate donor for the project "Una scelta possibile" [A Feasible Choice], by funding a disadvantaged student's tuition for three years. Then, in the current academic year, the company has given the University another donation funding a student's partial tuition exemption for the whole duration of the Bachelor Degree. Behind the choice made by the transnational bank is the willingness to improve society through education, as Alberto Martini, Bocconi class of 1992, remarks. He is the current Segment Head at UBS Wealth Management, and in charge of Corporate Social Responsibility for Italy. He argues: "The contribution given by UBS furthers the social inclusion of youngsters coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, by using higher education as leverage for social mobility, as key to create a responsible citizenry, and build a more equitable and sustainable community."

Martini's words echo the sense of the project launched by Bocconi last year to recruit students coming from poor backgrounds who have plenty of talent, but whose families are in precarious financial situations. The overarching aim is to foster social inclusion, and thus upward social mobility, which creates value for the whole community.
