Limitless Sara

THE TWENTY YEAR OLD CLEACC STUDENT IS AMONG THE WINNERS OF AN INTERNATIONAL POETRY COMPETITION IN PARIS. BUT THE AWARD IS ONLY THE LATEST IN NUMEROUS AWARDS AND HER DEBUT COLLECTION OPENS WITH A PREFACE BY THE POET ALESSANDRO QUASIMODO

"One morning, I was in the waiting room gefore getting some tests, I took out my notebook and wrote 'If I were a butterfly'. As a child I wrote short stories, then I felt the need to condense and crystallize the words. In poetry every word has a weight, every word counts.” At that moment Sara D'Aniello, twenty-year-old from Fondi (Latina) in the second year of a Bachelor program at Bocconi, did not yet know that those verses would give rise to a passion that led her to excel in 13 Italian and international literary competitions (and to be recognized in 25 others). The most recent, just a few days ago, was a first prize in the 'foreign students in the world' section of the international competition in Paris 'Poésie en Liberté', sponsored by the French government.

“I won with a poem called Alzheimer,” says the Bocconi student. Verses that address one of Sara's favorite themes, the finiteness of man. "I prefer to avoid the most recurring themes, such as love, or, if I deal with them, I try to do it in less usual ways. I am more fascinated by the crudeness of limits, such as those of the memory that disappears with that disease.” The limits, or rather, the absence of them, were also the themes of that first poem on freedom (the 'Butterfly') which she dedicated to her grandparents, and which was so appreciated in her area that it became a sculpture in the Piazzetta della Lettura of Monte San Biagio. From there, she began participating in her first competitions.

In addition to the various awards, today Sara also has an entry in the Encyclopedia of contemporary Italian poets and a collection of verses published in 2019, Effetti collaterali (Side effects), whose preface bears the signature of Alessandro Quasimodo, son the famous author of Ed è subito sera (Suddenly evening) and a poet in his own right. However, poetry is not the only focus of Sara's life. "I have been playing drums for eleven years, I have been boxing for five - I also did it at a competitive level - and every year I try to dedicate myself to volunteering as well," she says. Her latest experiences? "In February at the mental health association 'Aiutiamoli’  and this summer with the children of the Summer Center organized by the Arci Bellezza in Milan, near Bocconi".

Right, Bocconi. This too, was a precise choice: “I was looking for a program that could combine scientific and technical subjects with the humanities. If I hadn't gotten into CLEACC it would have been a problem because I didn't want to study only economics, I wanted to bring the two world togethers.”
