Bocconi #Startup Day Award: The Best Startups of 2016

ALL AWARDS IN THE SECOND EDITION OF THE AWARD ORGANIZED BY THE UNIVERSITY IN COLLABORATION WITH CITI FOUNDATION ARE IN THE AREA OF NEW TECHNOLOGY AND DIGITAL SOLUTIONS. THE CEREMONY TOOK PLACE TODAY DURING BOCCONI #STARTUPDAY

Companies looking towards the future: one with a new way of checking for defects and contamination in the production process (Xnext); one that reinterprets physical therapy through gaming (Play2Rehab); and a digital platform for finding professionals and artisans (ProntoPro). These are the winners chosen by an international panel in the second edition of the Bocconi #StartupDay Award, which awards particularly innovative and promising startups established in Italy.

11 startups reached the final stage of the award, divided into three categories: the best 2016 startup, the best startup in the field of innovation in social issues, the best millennial startup (i.e. with an under 30 team). Startups won free access to an SDA Master for one member of the business team and cash awards for a total of €35,000.

The awards ceremony took place this morning at Bocconi University, during a #StartupDay event that also included a conference with the Government Commissioner for the Italian Digital Agenda, Diego Piacentini, and a Marketplace. During the latter, 42 startups with ties to Bocconi (because they were founded by students or alumni, incubated at Speed MI Up or involved in ICRIOS’s Startup Training) presented their business plans to around 40 potential investors.

Best Startup 2016
Xnext (www.x-next.com).
Using X-Spectra technology, an x-ray system that identifies foreign bodies in the production process, Xnext revolutionized the way of checking for defects and contamination in food and industrial products. The new technology not only makes products safer for final consumption, it also generates considerable potential savings for companies by eliminating the risk of having to recall all the items from a contaminated or defective production line. X-Spectra also opens up new prospects for sectors such as the medical and public security industries. In this last case, there is potential impact on the mechanisms for checking luggage in train stations and airports.
Business team: Bruno Garavelli, Pietro Pozzi, Valerio Guareschi, Massimo Nacci, Elisa Balbo, Alessandra Mencarelli, Daniele Macera, Patrizio Bertoni and Davide Cerizza.

Social Innovation Startup 2016
Play2Rehab (www.playtorehab.com)
NiuRion uses a videogame for physical therapy. This is the idea of a group of physical therapists and software experts – the founders of Play2Rehab – to allow patients to complete customized and autonomous rehabilitation sessions that are also effective and fun. How does it work? Just like an interactive console videogame: the system has a kit of sensors to record movement, which the patient views through an interface similar to a videogame. The system can also be applied to medical and hospital equipment.
Business team: Alessandro Tesio, Gabriele Ceruti, Thomas Orlandi, Jessica Rispoli, Marta Valenti, Gianluca Meneghel and Cristian Valcher.

Millennial Startup 2016
ProntoPro (www.prontopro.it)
A simple idea that solves everyday problems. ProntoPro is a platform available all over Italy that puts professionals and artisans in touch with consumers. End users can register and make requests by completing an easy online questionnaire and will quickly receive several estimates. The service is evaluated at the end of the work. The young startuppers aim to develop this ambitious project in more than 80 countries in the near future.
The business team includes Marco Ogliengo and Silvia Wang.

#StartupDay has been organized by Bocconi in collaboration with Citi Foundation and with the support of AIFI (Italian Association of Private Equity, Venture Capital, Private Debt), IAG (Italian Angels for Growth), the Bocconi Alumni Association, Economia & Management, Speed MI Up and the SDA Bocconi School of Management.
