A Bocconi Alumnus' Passion Gives Birth to the First Social Network for Foodies

TWELVE YEARS AFTER THE MASTER'S DEGREE AT BOCCONI, DAVID CARTER SHINN REALIZES HIS DREAM BY FOUNDING NEEACH, THE FIRST SOCIAL NETWORK FOR FOOD LOVERS. TO SHARE RECIPES, OPINIONS AND TO SUPPORT SMALL PRODUCERS AND LOCAL RESTAURATEURS

“My name is David Carter Shinn and I love herbs, beer and sausages. On the lookout for hearty meals and new things to eat & drink!”. That is how the Bocconi alumnus (pictured right), introduces himself on his Neeach personal page, the social network for food lovers that he founded with Christian Isaksen (pictured left). The platform was also presented during the London TechCrunch Disrupt, an international fair dedicated to startups. "We asked ourselves, how do we buy local products abroad? So, it all started with a marketplace where small producers and restaurateurs could gain more visibility abroad, interact with customers and sell their products", explains David. "This idea then evolved and we created a real social network where users can exchange recipes and tips, as well as buy local products”, he continues. "Italy is very present on the social. Small Italian producers mainly sell oil, honey and parmesan cheese".

David was born in the USA. After graduating at North Carolina State University, he came to Milan to attend a Master in International Economics and Management at Bocconi University. "I’ve always been passionate about food and cooking and during this period of study in Italy I was able to discover and appreciate the local cuisine". The Master, "which, among other things, has taught me to become the entrepreneur of myself," he points out, was followed by various work experiences, including six years in Oslo in the energy sector. However, his love for food has remained, so a year and a half ago he decided to drop everything and devote himself to the creation of the platform. "We think that there’s a need for more specific social networks, focused on a particular topic, to aggregate existing communities", says David. Neeach could in fact be a showcase and a place of exchange for all the so-called "foodies". From  bloggers in search of greater visibility to amateur enthusiasts who post photos of their dishes on Instagram or Facebook. "Why the name Neeach? Well, It's a constructed word from "near" and "reach" and also sounds similar to ‘niche’, which is appropriate because it perfectly reflects the nature of Neeach, a niche social network!”.
