Goodbye Hong Kong, Destination Milan

THE INAUGURAL CLASS OF THE WORLD BACHELOR IN BUSINESS, PROGRAM HELD IN 3 CONTINENTS, HAS FINISHED THE SECOND YEAR HONG KONG AND IS GETTING READY TO ARRIVE IN BOCCONI FOR THE THIRD. SOFIA GAZZOTTI TALKS ABOUT THIS LAST YEAR IN ASIA

The voyage continues for the pioneers of the World Bachelor In Business (WBB), the innovative  program created by Università Bocconi, University of Southern California (USC) and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), which is held in 3 continents and sees the awarding of 3 diplomas. Described as "brave pioneers" at the beginning of their adventure, after the first year spent Los Angeles the students have now finished their second year at Hong Kong and are preparing for the next year in Milan, in Bocconi.

“On arrival in Hong Kong the first impact was strong for everyone, finding ourselves in front of an un unknown world and culture,” tells Sofia Gazzotti, from Italy, 21 years old, part of the cohort of 42 students coming from 13 countries in North America, Europe and Asia. “We were however also fascinated by it all and in due course, thanks also the mixed classes with local students, we integrated and made friends.”

“From an academic point of view it was a very challenging year. Every week there were tests or assignments and we were continuously put to the test. We explored very different areas, from operations management to statistics to IT systems.  Particularly interesting was the course specifically addressed to us, Understanding Business in Asia,” says Sofia. “Not forgetting the Chinese language exam, very tough!”

A year in class enriched also by guest speakers from the local business and finance community, a study tour in Tokyo,  company visits in Hong Kong, such as to the Wall Street Journal and the Stock Exchange, and networking meetings, organized also by the local chapter of the Bocconi Alumni Association.

“Respect to Los Angeles we lived the campus less and the city more. Hong Kong is a beautiful and fun city, full of young people,” explains Sofia. “And then, amongst us in small groups, we organised may trips to explore the different sides of the continent, from Beijing to Shanghai, in Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam. We even went into the Fujian province to visit the tea company of the family of one our classmates – it was fascinating to see all the different production phases of tea and then drink it  according to local tradition with friends and family.”

Now many of the students are in internships, like Sofia who is in Singapore at a company founded by a Bocconi alumnus which offers tax and accounting services. With a date set for everyone in Bocconi on August 31 for the kick off of the third year.
